Course Overview

“Mastering Spanish Verb Phrases: The Spanish Equivalent of Phrasal Verbs” is a comprehensive course designed for English-speaking learners who have reached at least an A2 level in Spanish and are ready to deepen their fluency and understanding. This course is tailored for intermediate and advanced students who want to sound more natural, accurate, and confident in real-life Spanish conversations by mastering those tricky multi-word verb constructions that native speakers use every day.

Who Is This Course For?

This course is perfect for you if:

  • You can already hold basic conversations in Spanish and understand simple texts but want to take your communication to the next level.
  • You have ever been confused by Spanish verb phrases that don’t translate directly into English.
  • You want to avoid common mistakes and sound more like a native speaker in both informal chats and formal settings.
  • You are preparing for travel, work, study, or social situations where authentic Spanish is used.

Why Is This Course Useful?

Native Spanish speakers frequently use verb + preposition phrases (such as pensar en, confiar en, soñar con), fixed verb expressions (llevar a cabo, dar con, acabar de, tener que), and verbs whose meaning changes with different prepositions (contar con, pasar por, quedar con). These are the Spanish equivalent of English phrasal verbs like “give up,” “look after,” or “run into.” Many learners struggle with these expressions, leading to misunderstandings or unnatural speech. By understanding how these phrases work, you will:

  • Recognize and correctly use common Spanish verb phrases in context.
  • Learn the literal and real meanings of these expressions.
  • Compare them to similar English phrasal verbs for easier memorization.
  • Practice forming sentences and using these phrases naturally in conversation.
  • Gain cultural insights and avoid typical mistakes made by non-native speakers.

What Will You Learn?

Throughout the course, you will:

  • Explore essential verb phrases for everyday communication.
  • Master travel and movement-related expressions.
  • Express emotions and social intentions fluently.
  • Speak confidently about work, study, and formal situations.
  • Understand idiomatic expressions and cultural nuances.

Each lesson breaks down a key verb phrase or group of phrases, explains its literal and practical meaning, provides examples in Spanish (with English translations), and gives you quick practice or quizzes to reinforce your learning. You will also see tips, common mistakes, and comparisons to English, making it easier to remember and use these phrases.

Course Structure

The course is organized into five clear, practical topics:

  1. Common Everyday Verb Phrases
  2. Travel and Movement Expressions
  3. Emotions and Social Interactions
  4. Work, Study, and Obligations
  5. Formal and Idiomatic Verb Phrases

Each topic includes short, focused lessons, practical examples, and quizzes. At the end, you will complete a final quiz to consolidate your knowledge and ensure you are ready to use these expressions with confidence.

Instructor

I’m Alan — originally from Norway, but for most of the year, you’ll find me soaking up the sun in southern Spain. I spend about nine months here, and when summer comes around, I head back north to enjoy the fresh air and long days of the Norwegian coast.

I’m a big fan of fishing, sailing, and slow mornings with strong coffee. In Spain, I organize casual speaking clubs for English-speaking neighbors — we get together to chat, laugh, and figure out what on earth the locals just said.

That’s why I started creating these courses: to help fellow learners go beyond textbook Spanish and get to the good stuff — the phrases, expressions, and cultural hints that make real conversations click. My goal is to help you feel more connected, more confident, and maybe even a little more local.
